Natural Form Drawing Exploration-LEARNING TO SEE
Inspired by artists Jim Dine, Ian Murphy and Amiria Gale, we will be exploring COMPOSITION (how shapes are organized within a frame) through observational drawing.
We will incorporate the use of TEXTURED and COLLAGED surfaces to add another dimension into our drawing. We will also be using VALUE (tints, tones and shades) to create the illusion of 3 dimensionality to our drawings. We will focus on the use of CONTRAST to create drama as well as figure/ground separation to our drawings Media for drawing/painting Graphite sticks, charcoal pencil, collage, coffee, tea, Chinese ink, White Gouache paint, Ecoline color inks 1. Media Testing-Experimentation with a variety of media 2. Formative Assessment: -2 small practice drawings (1 vertical, 1 cross hatching collage) -1 large drawing (using collage to follow the form of our natural shape) 3. Project Planning in sketchbook (look in the next column for details) 4. Summative Assessment: Final project on cardboard OR watercolor paper. You may do 1 large drawing or a series of smaller drawings. You may choose the object, or series of objects you want to showcase. CREATIVE CHOICES (where you will use your imagination): staining your paper, how you collage your background, your composition, added patterns, dripping etc. |
Sketchbook-Project Planning
for your Summative Assessment Previous studies you should have in your sketchbook: 1-Composition sketches 2-Value Scales in 4 media Media Testing 3-Two pages in sketchbook-Cut out sections of your media testing sheet(s) and glue them in your sketchbook labeling what media you used. 4-One page: Photos of your 3 formative assessment drawings Under each one, write down: - how did you use COMPOSITION when mapping out positive and negative space? - how did you use VALUE to create the illusion of form in your drawing? - how did you use CONTRAST to create a separation of figure/ground as well as drama? Planning for your final project 5-Ideation page-this can be made up of sketches and writing to support your thinking and decisions. --What do you want to create in your final project? --What object(s) do you want to use? --What STORY do you want to tell about your object? --How will you tell this story? 6-Compositions and Final Plan -One page -Sketch out 2-3 composition ideas for what you want to do. Explore positive and negative space. Think about visual weight. Where will it be? What IMAGINATIVE CREATIVE ELEMENTS will you add into your drawing to support the STORY you want to tell? Will you use multiples of your object? Final Plan-about half a page should be dedicated to drawing out your final plan. It should be a roadmap drawing to help you begin. If you are using color, what colors will you use? (no more than 2 colors) What STORY do you want your work to tell? How will you tell this STORY through your drawing? - how will you use COMPOSITION when mapping out positive and negative space? - how will you use VALUE to create the illusion of 3 dimensional form in your drawing? - how will you use CONTRAST to create a separation of figure/ground, as well as to create drama in your image? Include notes next to your final plan drawing stating what media you plan to use for certain areas. |
Summative Project Process
Once you finish your sketchbook final plan, and you have a clear roadmap of where you are headed with your project, you may begin!
You will have 5 studio days in the classroom for this project.
Our Grading Rubric will be a work in progress, as this is a new unit.
So far the criteria you should be aware of is:
You will have 5 studio days in the classroom for this project.
Our Grading Rubric will be a work in progress, as this is a new unit.
So far the criteria you should be aware of is:
- how will you use COMPOSITION when mapping out positive and negative space?
- how will you use VALUE to create the illusion of 3 dimensional form in your drawing?
- how will you use CONTRAST to create a separation of figure/ground, as well as to create drama in your image?
- how is your “STORY about your object” conveyed? What elements will help you tell this story?
- how will observational drawing (drawing from LIFE) help you as you depict the illusion of form?
- Will you have an area of EMPHASIS or a FOCAL POINT where you want the viewer to be drawn to as the most important part of your image? How will you create this visual interest? Through contrast, or color, or shape etc?
Jim Dine
Ian Murphy-From Ian Murphy, we will practice some of the techniques he uses to add depth and dimension using collage as he ground for a drawing. We will also look at the way he increases the drama of a drawing by exaggerating contrast (increasing the highlights as well as the shadows).
